Henry IV, Part 2: Induction, Scene 1
Warkworth. Before the castle.
The play opens with an Induction spoken by Rumour, a figure "painted full of tongues," before Warwick Castle. Rumour boasts of how it spreads lies and false report throughout the world, then reveals the deception it has already set loose: word is spreading that the rebels triumphed at Shrewsbury and that Prince Hal and the King were slain — the opposite of the truth, since Hotspur is dead and the rebellion crushed. Rumour establishes the play's central concern with false report, uncertainty, and the gap between what is said and what is real, before the Earl of Northumberland receives garbled news of his son Hotspur's fate.
